When Reggie, Blog Dog to Pet Nutrition Blogger Rodney Habib of Planet Paws, challenged me to run bare-pawed with him on the winter ground, I wasn't about to back down. If the pups can handle these conditions, I could too right? Without snow yet on the ground here in Nova Scotia we had to improvise to replicate conditions for our experiment. As it turns out, I'm a wimp. It was cold, my feet hurt like crazy. I couldn't run on the spot, let alone around the neighbourhood! Today, I'm feeling a little more empathetic to the concerns of our dogs as we approach winter this year.
Regardless of the season or the terrain, there are an array of debris and conditions that can wreak havoc on your pup's paws. Be it hot pavement and gravel in the summer, rough twigs or thorns on the trail, frozen ground or deicers in the winter each pose a risk to your dog's paws while you're outside being active together.
There are many products on the market to help combat the conditions, but if you're looking for an allergy safe, non toxic solution, you don't need to look any further than your pantry cupboard. Here's our go paw balm solution at DogRunnin:
Pup Safe All Weather Paw Balm
You'll need: shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, a small pot, glass storage jars or tins (we recommend using storage containers with a wide mouth so you can easily glide your dog's paw across the surface to apply.).
1) Over a low heat bring 2 tbsp of shea butter, 4 tbsp of each olive oil and coconut oil, and 8 tbsp of beeswax. Stir until melted and well blended.
2) Pour mixuter into storage tins and let cool.
3) Once the paw balm has hardened cover, label, and keep a small jar in every place you keep your dog's gear. At DogRunnin we keep a small amount in the car, in each kit bag and by each door with all gear and leashes. The balm will keep for up to two years, just remember to keep is away from direct heat.
Not just for dogs, this mixture works great for human's too. Don't miss out on this healing balm for chapped lips or dry cuticals over the winter months.
